AC'97 (Audio Codec '97; also MC'97 for Modem Codec '97) is an audio codec standard developed by Intel Architecture Labs in 1997. The standard was used in motherboards, modems, and sound cards. The specification covers two types of component, and the 'AC-link' digital interface between them.

- Front panel audio design in conjunction with motherboard audio header design is dependant upon the type of audio CODEC being used on the motherboard. In the past, AC’97 Integrated Audio CODECs were prevalent. With the introduction of Intel High Definition Audio, many new motherboard designs are switching over to High Definition (HD) audio CODECs.

AC'97 Audio Codecs Editor's Review
AC’97 Audio Codec is the latest stereo audio codec from Realtek Semiconductor Corporation designed to handle all of their customers’ audio needs.
The program can be used on a variety of operating systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. However, at this stage there is no version for Apple Mac computers. The service works on multimedia systems that are based on AMR and CNR designs, including host and soft audio offerings. What’s more, the device is free to download.
Pros: Works on different operating systems
Cons: Not available for Apple computers
Conclusion: The service is very fast to use, while the variety of systems it is compatible with means the vast majority of PC users will find this program can handle their audio needs. Of course, there isn’t a version for Mac just yet, but the program is still a strong contender in the marketplace.
